He could be going through something that he feels he cannot tell anyone else. This could be something bad or something that he just needs to deal with. The fact that he stays in a separate room from his wife suggests that he's not inclined to put an effort into his marriage.

Now I know that's a wild accusation but the fact that he does not sleep with his wife or care to spend time with suggests that a) He's not interested in women at all or b) He maybe interested in another woman.

I feel sorry for the wife in all this but if she tries to gently talk to him and get him to open up or talk about his problems maybe it will help.
