My wife and her daughter are from mexico. We married in December 15 2008 can i now claim them on my 2009 tax return? Neither my wife or my new daughter have social security numbers. Please help.My wife and her daughter are from mexico. We married in December 15 2008 can i now claim them on my tax return?
There is a very simple solution - you may apply for an ITIN - an Individual Tax Identification number, for each of them.

You'll need to fill out Form W-7, and provide birth certificates, photo documents (or for minors, school or medical records) in order to complete the application - follow the instructions that come with the form.

If you're going to use a professional tax agency, the larger ones like the Big Green Square company have CAA's (certified accepting agents) that will help process the forms for you.

Good luck! Here's a link to the ITIN article with the Internal Revenue Service. (Remember - its not a social security number and does not authorize someone to work in the US, but it does allow you to claim your dependents.)My wife and her daughter are from mexico. You need to go get them SSN's. Also, you need to direct your question to the IRS.

You can file joint return as residents (as married filing jointly). On the return, you can claim her daughter. You will file W7 (ITIN application) with the tax return.
