I am divorced and remarried. I agree with jpg's answer - you need to pay careful attention at the beginning of the relationship. All of the warning signs were there when I started dating my first wife. Whomever you are with MUST treat you with respect - no violence, no belittling, no screaming or yelling. A lot of women who had fathers who were alcoholic, abusers, controlling or otherwise poor fathers are attracted to the same kind of man because the fathers were their only role models and the kind of men they feel most comfortable with. My advice would to see a therapist to guide her through changing this behavior so she have a fair chance at a healthy relationship. I think if they could stop this themselves they would, they need help
There really isn't any advice to give or any mistakes that are made, well maybe one. The biggest mistake most people make is not paying attention in the beginning of a relationship. When things are new people tend to ignore the things that will later become problems in a relationship, but once you get comfortable with someone you start paying more attention to their faults.
people have to live by their own mistakes. I got divorced cause my ex started drinking a lot and became abusive. he would call me really nasty names and he would push me against the wall by my throat and he had punched me in the back of my neck as i was walking away from him.. all i did was ask him to please stop calling me a B***
