My girlfriend is disabled. We want to get married but her family has told her she needs a guardian release.?

She won a settlement. I assume that her mother holds her estate. My girlfriend knows nothing about her finances nor if she receives SSI. She's in a bad enviroment, and we want to get married, her family has told her that she needs a guardian release to do so, is that true?My girlfriend is disabled. We want to get married but her family has told her she needs a guardian release.?
Her family is full of crap. They want to continue to use her as a cash cow. As long as she is over 18 she can get married. She needs to find out how to go about managing her own financial affairs. I hope you are wanting to marry her out of love and devotion, not an attempt to use her for your own financial gain like her family is.

Best wishes. My girlfriend is disabled. We want to get married but her family has told her she needs a guardian release.?
Get a lawyer, and if she's disabled, contact Social Security on her behalf (take her if you can). If there is a settlement, then be sure that hopefully her parents haven't sucked the supply dry, and that there's a long-term financial packet for her, to keep her safe and with medical care for the rest of her life.
well depending on her age maybe but if she is 18 or older i believe she doesnt i would go to a lawyer for some advise her family could be keeping her money thats hers away from her and shes entitled to it
I assume she's an adult? If she's a minor she can't marry without her parents consent.

If she's an adult, it depends on the nature and degree of her disability.

If a court has ruled her to be incompetent and has appointed a guardian, then that guardian stands in the same position as a parent to a minor child.

If she is, however, only *physically* disabled, but is still competent to handle her own affairs, then her parents have no authority over her.
